REG HARDY reports from Ottawa that the Dominion range experimental station at Manyberries faces slim odds of relocation during departmental retrenchment. Proposals to move about 10 miles north of Medicine Hat were discussed but rejected as uneconomical and impractical given land use and local staffing needs.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill addresses a joint session in Washington, pledging Britain will defend Europe and join a strong response to potential Communist aggression in the Far East. He argues for deterrents against aggression and warns against disarming nuclear weapons until peace is secure. He also calls for international control of the Suez Canal and closer U.S.-Britain ties with bipartisan support.
Passengers and 32 crew of the City of San Francisco were freed after three and a half days trapped in Donner Pass. They walked a quarter mile to a cleared road then rode to a lodge for food and medical care before boarding a relief train to Sacramento. Two stretcher cases were evacuated. Dr. Walter H. Raehll of Middletown, Ohio was praised for saving lives.
At a UN political committee meeting in Paris, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky dismissed any field settlement of the Korean War, citing “unreasonable demands” by the American command. He labeled General Van Fleet a cannibal and accused Dean Acheson of opposing atomic control, while the committee referred his atomic program to a new disarmament commission for study.
Evelyne Wolff 22 wife of Rev. Odine Wolff a former Medicine Hat pastor died after an unusual Regina car collision. Her baby was stillborn shortly after hospital arrival and she died hours later. She rode with her mother in law E B Wolff 42 of Green Bay. Wolffs were in Chicago for a revival when crash occurred.
France's foreign trade minister Pierre Pflimlin warned the nation's heavy industry is running short of essential materials for rearmament. He told the Paris chamber of commerce that high prices and global shortages threaten supplies of coke, copper, molybdenum and tungsten.
A five day storm isolates towns across northern California causing power and transport disruptions. Portola reports critical isolation after a gas explosion and nine foot snowdrifts. At least 13 deaths and widespread property damage are attributed to the storm as storms threaten more rain and snow in the Sierra and Southern California.
Moreton skip Julie Moreton and her Medicine Hat rink captured top honors at the fifth annual Lethbridge Ladies Curling Club Bonspiel. They won two events and the grand aggregate with 10 wins and two losses. Ethel Felger and Ruth Reed of Lethbridge won the other events. Thirty five rinks competed at the new Lethbridge ice centre. The Moreton rink featured Polly Beaton Milly Clary and Elsie Grant.
The local fire department was called out at 7.30 Thursday morning to extinguish a blaze in a caboose at the west end of the station. Interior and contents were damaged. The fire likely started by convection due to the stove being banked up for the night and overheating as temperature rose.

RCAF officer Sgt Don Matheson says evidence exists to charge a man with Jenny Conroy's 1944 killing. He sought the attorney general's guidance after sending his report and case summary to Victoria. Conroy, 24, vanished after a Christmas party and was found dead near a cemetery.
