The inaugural meeting of the Town Council in the Council Chamber saw Mayor Finlay and Councillors Lune Ross Hitchinson and Forster with Town Clerk Adsit. They adopted minutes, ratified waterworks actions, discussed licensing, appointments, and budgets, and named standing and water works subcommittees. The council planned to hire staff, purchase fire equipment, and consider legal services and safe procurement. The session adjourned near 11 pm.
The mounted police adopt a new uniform announced by Ottawa. Boots shift to brown laced styles, gauntlets replace white gloves, and starch is discarded. Red serge replaced by a blue tunic for service. pill box and white helmet abandoned, new hats and a fur cap issued. Moccasins replaced with felt boots, overall aim to look less military and more practical.
A public meeting is set in the Reading Room on Friday January 7 at 8 pm to discuss organizing a reading room and a young men’s association. Mayor Finlay will chair, A McDonald will review the movement’s history and outline proposed schemes. Ample time for discussion. large attendance expected.
