Gold rose to 377 an ounce in Zurich, up 30 from Wednesday, prompting Midland Doherty's Michael O'Brien to suggest a possible end to the bear market and start of a new bull run. Gold stocks also rallied, with Echo Bay Gold Mines up about 22 percent today.
Herbert W. Armstrong founder and pastor general of the Worldwide Church of God and creator of the Plain Truth magazine died at his Pasadena home at age 93. Church official Earl Reese said there was no clear cause of death, noting a long and full life.
Law Enforcement Appeal Board faulted the Medicine Hat Police Commission for unbecoming conduct and mishandling the McLeod dismissal. Lavalin, Lavalin Inc. linked to the latest offer, declined comment amid Ottawa talks confirming negotiations to save the plant, which could affect about 430 jobs.
Norman Gallagher thought he won the 10.2 million Lotto 6-49 prize after placing a late order with Winshare in Mississauga. The order was never processed due to a computer malfunction and deadline miss, leaving him with nothing. American ticket seller Winshare defended the error while Ontario Lottery Corp. prepared to verify ownership and potential court handling.
