A six man coroner jury in Castlegar B C returned a closed verdict on the traffic deaths of two women last month Mrs Anne Julie Hardie of Kinaird BC and Mrs Carolyn Walker of Red Deer Alta The jury urged more consistent sanding of road grades and highways and asked RCMP to inform Highway Department foremen when sanding is needed saying current sanders are inadequate for the Castlegar area.
President Eisenhower presented a fiscal year 1957 budget calling for a federal outlay of 71.8 billion dollars with a defense share of 45.3 billion and an overall surplus of 1.8 billion despite no general tax cuts. The Alberta government censor board banned the film Baby Doll. Deputy provincial secretary E R Hughes cited reasons for rejection and Warner Brothers has 30 days to appeal. The film faced criticism for its suggestive and squalid storyline about a feeble minded girl in the deep South.
A Saskatchewan hearing on SaskPower’s bid to export gas from the Medicine Hat sands features testimony on reservoir reserves and drainage. Lawyers and geologists from DeGolyer McNaughton assess how development of adjacent fields could lower pressure and increase drainage in the proposed export area over a decade.
At a conservation board hearing Saskatchewan Power Corp could obtain all its gas from the Trans-Canada Pipeline. Robert Herring testified that Trans-Canada would price gas to Saskatchewan at 22.7 cents per thousand cubic feet, with Britalia offering 10 cents at the wellhead and 13.6 cents at the compressor station inside the border. The SPC has a 12 inch pipeline 112 miles from Swift Current to Moose Jaw and plans a 16 inch line east of Medicine Hat to a Saskatchewan compressor station. first year demand is 7.8 billion cubic feet with 2.5 billion from Trans-Canada and the rest from Britalia holdings.
A conservation board hearing was interrupted when a small fire in an ashtray in the anteroom was detected near 11 am. It was quickly extinguished. Commerce solicitor McGillivray quipped that Medicine Hat testing a new fuel caused the smell.
