In Boynton Beach Florida police investigated a spate of 911 calls with no speech. They found Barbara Marple 23 a supermarket worker asleep while her calico cat Kitten had paw on a cordless phone triggering the calls.
Alberta's Elaine McCoy urged Calgary public school teachers and the school board to settle the dispute quickly for the city’s 94000 students. She said the province could order a return to work if the strike drags on and noted mediators are available to assist. A four hour meeting yielded little progress. McCoy did not comment on the teachers' demand for a 7.6 percent one year wage increase.
The European Community recognized Slovenia and Croatia as independent states, while Bosnia and Macedonia were not yet granted recognition.
