Train routes restored across Canada under Via Rail overhaul
Transit minister Don Mazankowski announced six passenger routes would be restored and Via Rail would acquire new equipment. Legislation would turn Via into a Crown corporation with a clear mandate while renegotiations with CN Rail and CP Rail aim to reduce costs. A new three member board from the Passenger Rail Action Force will lead improvements. Routes include Edmonton Jasper Vancouver Montreal Saint John Toronto Havelock Montreal Sherbrooke Montreal Mont Joli and Montreal Sudbury via Ottawa. Edmonton Calgary dayliner is dropped.
