Rose Christman, a 70 year old Avon representative in Coeur d Alene, faces charges for illegally selling cosmetics from her Best Avenue home in a zoned noncommercial area. She has run a shop at her house for years amid multiple undercover operations and a recent sale of exotic melon colored lipstick to an undercover officer.
The Conference Board of Canada says growth will rebound to about four percent by spring after a weak year. It warns high consumer debt and credit rates will limit spending to housing and autos, with unemployment near ten percent this year and the dollar around 87 cents US. The deficit is seen at about 35 billion dollars.
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators began direct talks breaking a deadlock in the Middle East peace process. A separate Israeli-Syrian meeting made no progress. The aim is self rule for 1.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Palestinians yielded on Jordanian involvement. Israel will meet Palestinians and Jordanians separately with occasional three way sessions.
Health Minister Nancy Betkowski, the sole bilingual minister in Premier Don Getty's Alberta cabinet, rejects his push to end the Official Languages Act. She warns reopening the debate risks national unity while highlighting bilingualism as a symbol of tolerance.
In Algiers the Islamic Salvation Front urges Algerians to resist the army led High Security Council after President Chadli Benjedid's resignation. The FIS, seeking an Islamic state, claims the move unconstitutional and fears a state of emergency as multi party elections were cancelled.
A second letter from an group calling itself the animal rights militia claims the 87 Canadian Cold Buster bars contaminated was a hoax aimed at harming Lawrence Wang and financiers. Tests found one bar with oven cleaner. recalls occurred in five provinces. The makers began shipping Cold Busters in new packaging.
Newfoundland Premier Clyde Wells rejects non Triple-E Senate terms and backs provincial parity for an elected upper chamber. Ontario's Bob Rae pushes a different path, resisting entrenchment of a social charter and signaling Ontario will not back deals without full involvement.
