An index weather note forecasts sunny conditions with a 10 percent chance of precipitation on Thursday. Highs around minus 10 degrees and lows near minus 22 degrees noted, with map reference on page B4.
Air BC applies to the Canadian Transport Commission to add Medicine Hat and Lloydminster as Alberta destinations. Ron Moore says plans are in early stages with no start date or cost yet. If Time Air runs two to three daily flights Air BC will match to compete. Public intervention deadline is February 16.
The Alberta legislature dismissed Clerk Bohdan Stefaniuk Assistant Clerk Robert Bubba and Administration Director Charles Elink after a terse notice from Speaker David Carter. The trio oversaw a $15 million budget and multiple staff divisions prompting questions about replacements and compensation.
Justice A M Lutz of the Court of Queen's Bench ruled that 58 year old Ronald Mund may stay on the land he has occupied since 1951 until compensation is arranged with the city of Medicine Hat. Mund called the decision a victory over a heartless administration while the city solicitor indicated an appeal may follow.
Armando Jimenez Rivera 28 a Dupont Plaza Hotel employee was charged by federal authorities with arson and interfering with interstate commerce for his role in the New Year’s Eve blaze that killed 96 people including two from Toronto. He faces possible Puerto Rican charges as well. another worker, Hector Escudero Aponte, is already charged with 96 counts of murder plus arson and interstate interference.
Storm blankets southeastern Alberta with 4.2 centimetres of snow since Tuesday evening as eight weeks of mild weather end. Medicine Hat police report 15 accidents last night, three with serious damage, two since nine this morning. City crews, including four sanding trucks, work to restore calm while officials urge cautious driving and illuminated vehicles. A front from Montana ends mild spell, with forecast -19 C low Thursday and -10 to -12 C day temperatures, warming to -3 to -4 C by weekend. Chinook Fest remains on for the warmest weekend in February.
