RCMP faced a deadly domestic dispute in Vegreville Alberta where Const. Allen Gary Giesbrecht was killed and a partner injured. Police, with the gunman barricaded in a one room bungalow, sought to calm the armed suspect through night negotiations in subfreezing conditions.
A U S B 52 bomber will fly a 2 500 km test corridor over the Beaufort Sea and across British Columbia and Alberta to Cold Lake Alberta with four cruise missiles on board none active during Tuesday's test. The trials run through March with two more live firings planned. Greenpeace and NDP officials criticize the tests as inconsistent with Canada’s nonnuclear policy.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney says he will not back creation of a provincial Conservative party in Quebec before the next election. He notes Conservative approval must come from party directors and stresses federal ties while avoiding direct stance on provincial votes. Bourassa welcomes the clarity, warning a federalist split could occur if a provincial Tory party formed.
In Ethiopia a Franco Ethiopian Railway Express derailed near Djibouti killing 418 and injuring 559 as passenger cars plunged into a ravine about 200 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. In Bangladesh a fire on the Santa Express after a short circuit killed dozens, with authorities confirming 27 dead and estimates up to 300.
Astronomer Priscilla Frisch from the University of Chicago says a dense core in a nearby interstellar cloud could interact with Earth's atmosphere, producing rain and altering atmospheric chemistry. The climate change would occur about 250 000 years from now, she warned at a University of Arizona symposium.
