Halifax reports say swollen rivers and ice jams in Nova Scotia cost at least two lives and caused nearly a million dollars in damage as floods spread across towns and villages. Lea Melanson, 65, died attempting to cross the Sissiboo River. his gun was found on the ice. A two year old, Joan Irving, was believed swept away near Travois by receding flood waters. Rescue efforts continued into the night with volunteers searching along the Salmon River.
The preliminary hearing for John Skriut of Myrnam Alta. on the suspected murder of employer Alex Smotiak, set for Dec. 29, was postponed a week and will be held in Vegreville. An inquest at Vermilion returned an open verdict, stating Smotiak was slain by a bullet fired through a window by an unknown person or persons.
Social Credit group No. 1 held a large meeting at Mitchell confectionery corner Fifth and North Railway streets with about sixty attendees. Dr. F. W. Gershaw spoke on Social Credit and poverty to the midst of plenty, answering questions before adjourning. The next meeting is set for Tuesday January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Montreal Jan 12 counsel for the crown said at a preliminary hearing for 51 accused in a 45 million liquor smuggling conspiracy that Atlas Shipping Co owned by four accused chartered 30 to 40 vessels and paid crews from company funds. Court heard 62 names on the case with 51 appearing before Judge Jules Desmarais as more are to be brought later. Prosecution claimed Atlas linked to contraband traffic and funds moved between Montreal and Halifax offices. the crown said in 1980 Atlas paid Distillers Corporation Seagrams Limited 3 055 166 55. Hearing to continue February 11 with about 3 500 documents expected.
Edmonton will request provincial action to enact or empower a law taxing at the source unearned increments at not less than 25 percent. The levy would cover interest on bonds and all dividends if approved by the city council after a special committee meeting.
Edw J Rew chief counsel for Beune Richard says Isaac Fisch wrote the ransom notes and canceled the $50 000 ransom in Hauptmann trial. Reilly says Fisch not only collected the ransom but authored the notes. Hauptmann contends he obtained the money from Fisch who died in Germany. The State shows extortion evidence but no murder proof to date.
