Montreal observers testified at the Fire Commissioner's probe that a fire at the Laurier Palace cinema triggered a stampede and the deaths of 77 children. Witnesses said the blaze appeared to begin in the balcony and three hours of inquiry revealed little about the blaze's cause.

Hamilton, Jan. 12. John Barty was hanged at 7.22 this morning for the murder of Mrs Nancy Cook, a grocery store clerk. The June crime shocked the town as Cook tried to stop Barty’s robbery, receiving a brutal blow with an iron bar. A prior stay and a failed appeal did not halt the sentence.
Roy Welsford, 17, was injured at Willard Service Station on South Railway Street yesterday evening. While oiling a pump shaft he dropped the oil can and reached past the turning shaft to retrieve it. A screw on a collar caught his sleeve and pulled his arm into the machinery. He was taken to hospital where Dr Gershaw treated a badly broken left arm above the elbow.
Premier J. E. Brownlee of Alberta and Dominion officials discussed implementing a joint report for developing the Tiley dry area southeast of Alberta near Medicine Hat. He pressed for amendments to the Canada Temperance Act and planned talks with Sir Henry Thornton on railway matters in Montreal.
