Alberta 4 H clubs hold district meeting with 30 club leaders in attendance as inter club activities and 4 H development are reviewed. Local leaders are brought up to date on progress and plans for the province.
A group of Young Liberals forced an overtime session at the national Liberal rally in Ottawa to discuss foreign and defence policy after the party executive had ruled no time for such debate. Warren Allmand moved to prepare a policy report on foreign policy, with Paul Hellyer aiding the effort to schedule further reports for 6:30 p.m. MST.
Ottawa report notes a Liberal rally launching a drive to win union locals across Canada to support Liberal ideas. Tom Radigan of Hamilton Ontario, steelworker and labor relations subcommittee delegate, urges creation of a national labor committee to coordinate political work with unions against the New Party.
Medicine Hat holds a public forum at Connaught School auditorium at 8 pm on the religion in the school issue. Rev. H A Morrow and Fred McGuinness headline a pro and con discussion for parents from Central Park Connaught Earl Kitchener and River Heights schools followed by small buzz groups and a secret ballot. Torrential rain in British Columbia’s lower mainland caused flooding over three days with two deaths and an eight year old missing. A 2,000,000 gallon reservoir burst sending a ten foot wall of water down the mountainside threatening dozens of homes. Residents evacuated as power and phones failed and bridges and mains were washed out.
Blair Bothwell an 18 year old charged with attempted murder after a shooting during a hunt. Masson a 15 year old shot in multiple locations including the back and neck is in satisfactory condition with a severed spinal cord feared to leave him crippled for life. Bothwell was wounded by police and remains hospitalized in stable condition as authorities await further action.
EDMONTON (DP) Alberta water resources director F L Grindley warned of a new drought period across the prairies with southern Alberta hit hard last summer and areas like Grande Prairie also dry. The drought traced to two years of subnormal precipitation and the St Marys irrigation dam nearly empty. Farmers used ridge cultivation to slow soil drift.
Premier E C Manning rejects Ernest Watkins public debate demand arguing there is no conflict in opinion. Watkins urges a constructive publicity route and questions Social Credit’s opposition stance during the Medicine Hat by election with Harry Leinweber as the Social Credit candidate.
