Prime Minister R B Bennett addressed Vancouver’s Junior Chamber of Commerce urging security behind paper currency and backing with gold silver or copper. He noted Canada holds gold security for notes and warned against excess money printing, stressing stable money for international trade.
London reports Sir John Simon’s Rome talks with Mussolini created a more hopeful outlook toward disarmament and diplomatic negotiations in Paris Berlin and other capitals. Officials say the secretaries findings confirm a favorable trend and urge continued discussions.
In Nanking on January 11 two life prisoners, a Swiss man Paul Nolens and his wife Gertrude Nolens, fast to death in a Chinese prison. The pair seek new trials after repeated requests were denied.
A coastal storm moved in early morning with flurries beginning at 5 30 a m and intensifying by noon. The snow fell heavily with high winds and temperatures around freezing 40 to 24 degrees were reported as the storm showed no immediate end.

Austrian authorities report over 500 Nazi suspects jailed after nationwide anti government protests. Lethbridge Kinsmen travel to Medicine Hat Friday to face the local Junior All-Stars at Arena 7 30. Clarence Guy Gordon Haddon, 43, an unemployed consulting engineer, fights charges of attempting blackmail and threatening the King. He wins right to call defense witnesses as Justice Charles at the Old Bailey adjourns to January 19 or 23. Haddon claims to be the illegitimate son of the late Duke of Clarence and says witnesses will prove his mother secretly married the duke. Paris reports France raises British quota to full level for many products while Foreign Minister Joseph Paul-Bony signs the Russo-French trade treaty. Soviet Russia agrees to buy 17 million dollars of French goods next year. France offers credit and tariff assurances. The pact includes exchange of commercial attaches and notes debts from the czarist era are not addressed.
Prepaid taxes for the first eight days this month are down by over 2000 dollars from the same period last year. Six large payments totaling 8940 dollars from last year remain uncollected but anticipated soon. This year 103 certificates for 27290 dollars were issued versus 106 for 29630 dollars last year, including two payments of 1700 and 1200 dollars not made previously. Overall, figures suggest payments will stay near last year's level as more taxpayers use pre payment privilege.
