Record cold snap grinds city to subzero levels
Between 8 and 9 this morning the mercury fell to 45 degrees below zero. By 11 o clock it was 44 below and at 5 30 this morning 40 below. Government meteorologist Hugh Hassard confirms the readings while amateurs report thermometers as low as 49 below. Curiously no frostbite cases reached hospitals despite the extreme cold.
