Prisoners at Sing Sing in Ossining New York seized 17 guards during a spontaneous uprising. Negotiators met with five inmates through barred tables as ABC crews observed. authorities reported all hostages safe and one minor injury.
Unions representing about 200 000 Quebec public workers vow an escalating illegal strike starting in two weeks to force the government to withdraw imposed contracts and reopen talks. A mass demo is planned Jan 29 in Quebec City as walkouts begin Jan 26 and spread by Feb 1.
