British bombers protected by hundreds of fighters swept over 1000 square miles of Northwestern France for an hour planting airfields and military targets. Coastal observers counted 50 bombers crossing the Channel and about 500 fighters covered the raid in daylight.
President Roosevelt urged rapid action on a broad lease lead program and asked Congress to grant sweeping authority to transfer and repair American military equipment for Britain and other democracies at war. The measure would authorize manufacture, sale or transfer of defense articles and repairs or testing to keep such items operational.
French reports say explosives attached to balloons drifting over southern France during raids on Britain. The devices described as flying mines drifted after storms, with one balloon reportedly bearing the name of a Liverpool manufacturer.

New York January 10 report says Issidore Lazarus aged 58 pleaded guilty to false statements in obtaining a passport and using it. A government prosecutor said Lazarus carried large sums from Germany to fund espionage and propaganda and was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 2500 dollars.
