In Detroit on January 19 the bodies of Edward C. Van Leyen 84 a prominent architect and his wife were found in a garage behind their Highlands Park home. Police say monoxide poison from a running car caused their deaths after Van Leyen started the motor and collapsed near the engine as his wife rushed to help her husband she was overcome as she opened the car door.
