H1N1 deaths rise as South Zone reports surge in cases

Alberta Health figures show 17 hospitalized and three in ICUs in the South Zone as of Jan. 7 with 71 lab confirmed H1N1 cases and four untyped. Provincewide totals reach 1,430 influenza cases including 1,287 H1N1 and nine H1N1 deaths.

Medicine Hat’s medical officer quits after brief tenure

The Medical Officer of Health for Medicine Hat, Dr Ada Bennett, vacated her post about a month ago after 15 months in the job. Alberta Health Services says no successor named yet and South Zone is covered by MOHs from Lethbridge and elsewhere while recruitment continues.

Snowshoe Lesson At Elm Street School With Police Point Centre

Emily Ritchie a Grade 2 student at Elm Street School enjoys learning snowshoeing with classmates. Police Point Park Nature Centre staff visit the school to teach grades 1 2 and 3 that snowshoeing is a fun winter activity. First North America H5N1 bird flu case in Alberta resident

The Canadian Press reports Canada's first H5N1 infection, an Alberta resident who returned from China. Ill on Dec 27, hospitalised Jan 1, died Jan 3. Health officials say the risk is very low and the case appears isolated. Expert commentary notes importation uncertainty.
