A powerful blizzard plowed across the eastern United States killing at least 20 people including two Canadians. Knee-deep snow closed air ports halted truckers and government operations. Thousands stranded at airports bus terminals and highway rest stops. USAir cancelled about 1 100 flights serving airports from Washington north.
A powerful winter storm forced the closure of major airports in Washington Baltimore Philadelphia Newark and New York City and led to states of emergency in eight states. The UN closed and New York City canceled classes for the first time since 1978. At least 20 deaths were blamed on the storm, mostly from traffic incidents, with two Ontario men killed on Kentucky highways. Blizzard warnings stretched from Kentucky to Massachusetts as frigid air and Atlantic moisture collided.
Barb Keenan calls it poetic justice after police recovered about $7,000 in stolen goods from a Calgary home. Her video cassette recorder, stolen in November, was found repaired by the thieves and returned along with a $70 repair bill.
Taipei reports say Taiwanese man James Huang, who killed four family members in a Surrey townhome before suicide, carried $250 million in debt from a failed Taipei department store project. RCMP say investigations into the debt link are ongoing. one child survivor, Jeff, was rescued by his mother.

A leadership convention is set for Feb. 24 with nominations due Jan. 17. no other contenders have emerged. Tobin, a strong critic of foreign fishing and architect of the 1.9 billion TAGS program, faces scrutiny over past policies and church school reforms in the province.
Police report two young Medicine Hat girls were hit by vehicles while crossing streets near Dundee Street and George Davidson Elementary School as icy roads after the Christmas break caused accidents. One six year old, Amy Lybbert, was treated and released, while the other girl was not seriously hurt, according to Principal Barry Shave. No charges were laid.
Calgary based report notes Ng, accused of torturing and murdering 18 people in an acreage killings near San Francisco, offered in 1988 to plead guilty in exchange for life. the deal was to be kept secret by Canadian and U.S. officials in Edmonton.
