London January 7 British Food Minister Lord Woolton announced the pegging of prices for a wide range of foods not to exceed December 2 levels. The list includes coffee cocoa chocolate canned and boiled vegetables canned pork and beans honey fish and poultry pastes poultry tapioca biscuits canned soups processed cheese custard powders jellies and nuts.
German raiders killed or wounded several in a Midlands town during the heaviest daylight raid in a campaign over the industrial Midlands, London, and the southeast coast. The raid prompted a three hour London alert with anti aircraft fire and explosions near the capital.
A Royal Air Force communique says British forces reached El Adem the Tobruk airport and captured 40 Italian planes they had damaged earlier. Italians abandoned the airfield as Tobruk, 70 miles west of Bardia, faces testing of its defences while bombings hit Tobruk Martuba and Derna.
Official British tally reports 94000 Italian troops rendered ineffective since December 9 in North Africa. The figure includes at least 70000 prisoners along with wounded and dead, and large quantities of war material captured.
New Zealand pledged full co operation with Australia after a visit by naval minister W M Hughes to probe possible fifth column leaks aiding German raiders. Two Royal Canadian Air Force training crashes claim seven lives. In Ottawa six miles east of the city a training plane went down during a morning flight. details and cause were not known. Near Rivers Manitoba five airmen died on a night navigation flight including pilot FO. M. D. MacBrien.
London reports serious damage to Church House Westminster the Church of England headquarters and six people were killed in a recent air raid the disclosure said.
Kiwanis Club President Bob Lacey outlined wartime duties at today's luncheon. He urged stronger support for the Empire's war effort and announced plans to be released by the war service committee. J. R. Wallis was elected fourth vice president, replacing Roy Everts, reassigned to Penticton, B.C.

An advance northeast of Chimara could cut Tepeleni Valona communications as Greece eyes Valona. Greece also says destroyers penetrated Valona gulf and shelled the town with 60 rounds, no Italian craft seen.
Edmonton sources say the ninth Alberta legislature may convene on February 20 with preparations possibly delaying to February 27 if needed. The information comes from usually reliable sources in Ottawa.
Senator Warren Austin said Americans have joined the side of freedom in the world conflict and, while prepared to fight if necessary, will not act until required. He urged that the United States policy debate be considered closed, linking Roosevelt’s re election to public determination in the war effort.
An Italian airman who survived a blitz over Matruh receives a bandage and light at a British camp in the Egyptian desert. The British report he is the lone survivor among 35 airmen whose aircraft were shot down in the air battle at Matruh.

Ottawa reports amendments to the war services regulations allow indefinite postponement for conscientious objectors and Doukhobor or Mennonite members. They can be called for non combatant training or civilian service for a period equal to their age class training. Applications for postponement must reach divisional registrars within eight days of notice to report for medical examination.
