Lloyd George warns of a widening gulf in Germany between militarists and nonmilitarists as Bolshevik negotiations intensify. The rift grows amid conflicting factions and political pressure as the crisis deepens.
London reports await the Central Powers' response to Premier Lloyd George's war aims statement. German leaders fault divisions between militarist and nonmilitarist camps over policy toward Russia. Von Ludendorff reportedly threatens resignation if hard line views prevail, while Czernin and Stueler oppose Reichstag compromise. Neutral observers fear a widening internal German crisis, contrasting with united Entente backing of Lloyd George's aims.
In all theatres major operations are building toward large clashes. Intensive day and night artillery duels rage in Flanders France and Italy with severe fighting near Ypres Cambrai Aisne Verdun and the Moselle. German attempts south of Ypres and on Hill 60 near Verdun are repelled with heavy German losses.

President Wilson presents a sweeping peace program calling for open covenants, free trade, armament reduction, colonial fairness, and the evacuation of territories, including Belgium and the Ottoman lands. He pledges to fight until these principles are achieved for a just and stable peace.
Following the afternoon meeting the City Council appointed a Building Committee and a Land Committee. Each panel will include the mayor, two aldermen, and two ratepayers. Mayor Urown named Aldermen Torrono and Wurns to the Building Committee and Bennett and Lang to the Land Committee.
Winnipeg on January 7 reports Harold Gifford Hutchings son of I Hutchings has enlisted with the engineering company of the forestry and railway depot. An exemption appeal will be heard by Mr Justice Duff in Ottawa shortly as directed by the central appeal court judge.
A Burdette man fell about forty two feet into a well at Burdette yesterday and is now hospitalized with a broken spine in critical condition. He was brought to Medicine Hat on the Crow's Nest train last night with details limited to the fall into the well.
Melbourne dispatch reports that the Hughes cabinet resigned and Tudor the opposition trader has been summoned to form a government. Hughes proposed unconditional resignation. Tudor may seek dissolution. Also noted is the death of Austro socialist leader Englebert Perneratorfer, longtime vice-president of the Austrian Diet since 1900.
The new Council met promptly at 8 and adjourned near midnight after a busy session. Mayor Brown proposed using committees to speed decisions and Aldermen signified approval by saying aye. A letter from Col McDonald offered 1450.60 for militia work, referred to Finance. Mayor Evans of Edmonton sought attendance at a January 6 conference with Alberta cities on tax and provincial acts. debate followed on whether a councilor should accompany the mayor or go alone.
