Alberta ministers say they will contest freight rate increases and accuse the federal government of allowing a 10 to 15 per cent rise while a 20 to 30 per cent rise is postponed. They demand rate equalization between meat and grain and warn of hardship for shippers and small businesses.
The Senate foreign relations committee urged CIA Director William Colby to review programs and report to Congress under the 1974 foreign aid bill. Senator Sparkman said any such activity should have ended December 30 or the required report must be submitted promptly.
Al Safir reports the Palestinian Liberation Organization backed by Syria rejected a U.S. proposal to name the Jordanian government as Arab intermediary for disengagement between Israeli and Jordanian forces along the Jordan River. The plan appeared in a broader U.S. bid for peace and followed Egypt’s push at a ministers’ meeting. The Sinai withdrawal proposal outlined four stages including Mitla Pass pullback and Suez canal reopening.
CP Rail informed the Canadian Transport Commission it will appeal a ruling that granted only part of the rail freight rate increase sought by major railways. A Federal Court of Appeal hearing was requested for Friday. The commission allowed 10 to 15 percent increases, below the 25 percent sought by CP Rail and CN. The rates, frozen 18 months ago at Transport Minister Jean Marchand's request, cover about 22 percent of rail traffic.
The 237,698 ton Showa Maru ran aground south of Singapore spilling about one million gallons of crude oil from three damaged tanks. Oil slicks spread three miles toward Sentosa and were sighted near Katong as detergents were sprayed to disperse the sheen. The vessel was en route from the Persian Gulf to Japan, with its bow high in the water in a busy shipping lane.
The Food Prices Review Board and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association urged retailers to use more heifer carcasses to cut beef costs. They noted heavier heifers can be marketed without quality loss, but Eastern Canada shows retailer resistance while Western chains buy when price spreads justify it.
Saskatchewan farm week speaker Mr. Gracey said occasional abuses exist but no systemic rip-offs in beef marketing. He praised the orderly system, urged price-relationship efforts, and warned of future producer consumer conflicts fueled by ignorance and media cynicism.
Canadian Cattlemens' Association secretary Chris Mills from Calgary says education rather than legislation is the remedy for a 10 cent per pound heifer steer price spread. He argues buyer dominance and retailer practices create the gap and calls for cooperation with government if further study is needed.
