Naval policy critic urges Polaris armed subs over large ships

Halifax based engineer John Gregory, a Polaris fire control expert, told reporters Canada’s defence policy favors big shipbuilding over real protection. He says Mackenzie class destroyers are obsolete, rests with Restigouche class modernization, and advocates Polaris armed submarines as a temporary upgrade. He notes NATO antisubmarine needs and non nuclear subs could suffice.

Well Known Teacher Catharine Baillie Dies in Medicine Hat

Miss Catharine Baillie a respected Medicine Hat teacher and University of Alberta alumna died Saturday after a lengthy illness. Her career began in 1927 at Connaught Elm Street Alexandra and Medicine Hat High Schools where she later taught modern languages. She leaves two sisters and a brother. Funeral arrangements by Pattison Funeral Home to be announced.

Milk price hike bid delays as firms seek quart rise

Purity Dairy and Union Milk Co Ltd of Medicine Hat and Lethbridge applied to the Public Utilities Board in Edmonton for a one cent per quart milk price increase. The delay stems from improper filing. Union Milk says no price rise and plans to skip deliveries on Wednesdays from Jan 16 to cut costs. Purity Dairy officials to decide midweek on Wednesday deliveries. Current delivered milk is about 22 and a half cents per quart.

Mercy plane shot down in Laos on refugee aid mission

A second American mercy plane with a Canadian co-pilot was shot down near northwestern Laos while delivering rice to refugees. Pilot James Fore Jr. and co-pilot Eddie Yip survived.

Two Women Injured In Southeast Medicine Hat Crash

Maude Schmalzbauer 54 of Balmoral Street driver of the car sustained a fractured left thigh and fractured right foot and remained in hospital in good condition. Betty Schafer 19 of Belfast Street was uninjured. The collision happened about 1:30 p.m. on the Hilda Schuler highway when the car left the road due to loose gravel. RCMP from Medicine Hat are investigating.
