Bank rate falls to 9.74 percent in Canadian markets

Ottawa reports money markets pushed Bank of Canada to cut the bank rate to 9.74 percent from 10.05 percent the lowest since September 1978. Traders say a weak economy and falling inflation, plus expectations of U S rate cuts, kept markets firm in driving the rate down. The central bank has been absorbing cash this week to curb the rate drop.

Montreal gunman holds woman hostage in St Hubert

An armed man seized a woman during a nighttime break in at a Soucy Street home in St Hubert. Police blocked a two-block area, negotiated with the suspect who demanded a car and money to reach Alberta. The incident began at 5 a.m. and hostages were progressively released as officers closed in.

Soviet Cosmos 1402 satellite to reenter Earth amid debris risk

The Pentagon warns the nuclear powered Cosmos 1402 may blaze back to Earth within weeks in an uncontrolled fall. It could drop radioactive fragments on populated areas and travel over oceans and many continents. Soviet officials say the satellite is functioning normally and poses no danger.

Santa Fund far exceeds goal in Medicine Hat drive

The Santa Claus Fund raised 23491.45 for 1982 in Medicine Hat surpassing the 10000 goal. Salvation Army distributed 203 hampers for 624 people with 346 children receiving gifts and Sunshine Bags to 1217 in nursing homes hospitals and detention centres. Remaining funds support 1983 efforts and family services.
