An ambulance crew arrived at the wrong address and forced a healthy 44 year old man named Leif onto a stretcher, despite his protests. The intended patient was a 57 year old with the same name from the same village, who traveled 65 kilometers to Kragero to register at the hospital.
In Alberta two Calgary men Henri James Carriere and Arthur Thomas Carriere face maximum life in prison for endangering an aircraft and causing a disturbance during a mid air fight on a Cold Lake to Medicine Hat charter flight which diverted to Provost. The pilot landed safely and continued after arrests. The men are to appear in Wainwright provincial court on Jan 10.
A young male suspect teeters atop The Outdoorsman gun shop in Medicine Hat for over three hours after breaking in through the ceiling. Police reported no weapon found. a misfire occurred as negotiators moved in, and the man surrendered around 6 a.m. The incident caused ceiling damage and temporary store disruption.
In Calgary and Edmonton debates surface over adding sexual orientation to the Individual’s Rights Protection Act. The province faces a court order to include gays and lesbians in human rights protections while the Conservative government appeals. Speakers cite discrimination in housing and employment and warn of ongoing homophobia without recourse.
In Grozny, after Yeltsin suspended air raids, only minor gunfire was heard signaling a respite from days of intense fighting. A Russian official claimed Grozny could fall under Russian control tonight without further battles as jets and troops arrive for the sixth day of the campaign. Independent TV aired footage of cluster bombs while doctors described nails-packed bombs used on the city.
Statistics Canada shows Medicine Hat with about 10 000 donors averaging 750 dollars each giving 7.4 million to charity in 1993, placing the city fifth in Alberta behind Calgary Edmonton Lethbridge and Red Deer. The report notes a three year local business upturn aiding giving.
