Prime Minister Lloyd George declares Britain and its allies fight no war of aggression but to establish democracy. He addresses trades unions outlining the war aims as pledged by the British people and their allies.
Premier Lloyd George summarizes Allied aims: Belgium independence with reparations, Alsace Lorraine reconsidered, an independent Poland, restoration of Serbia Montenegro and occupied France Italy Romania, withdrawal of alien armies, seaward treaty sanctity, separate national conditions for Arabia Armenia Mesopotamia Syria Palestine, an international armaments body, and German democracy as the path to peace. He stresses no aim to destroy Germany and that settlements hinge on governments consent and national will.
Draft Turkish peace terms presented to Russia call for free passage of the Dardanelles for Russian ships and Russian evacuation of Turkish territory. The plan would demobilize the Russian Black Sea fleet and keep native troops to support the war against the Entente.
Le Devoir denounces Lieut Col Nelson Spencer for a London Weekly Despatch piece claiming Quebec blocked war effort and conscription. The paper says Spencer fabricates truths about dynamite attacks and nationalist aid from Germany, and accuses him of ignorance.
Wilkesbarre Pa January report says about one hundred men and boys were trapped when the Burnium mine middle vein caved in at Pittston. The main gangway was not fully blocked and most prisoners escaped. About twenty were slightly hurt and seven miners remain untraced as officials search the wreckage.
Michael O Callaghan, sought by Britain for the 1916 murder of two police in Moncur Tiperrary Ireland, was discharged by a U S commissioner on the British consulate official's motion. He had been held in the Tombs since his arrest.

Capt Gordon LeCarty of Toronto among New Year honors list decorated with the Distinguished Service Order. He serves in the Royal Medical Corps and has two wounds from France. He is a brother of Norman A Mc Larty of Begg McLarty Evans, now en route home from Toronto.
Council members and the gas superintendent inspected the west city gas wells and two were blown off to test their condition. They also checked Canada Cement Company wells as Mayor begins negotiations to conserve gas and stop wastage at the Cully Farm.
Mexico City January 4 Announcement states the government has taken over the fleet of the Mexican Navigation Company to block sale to foreign interests and keep vessels in Mexican traffic. The steamers are expected to transport foodstuffs from Central America to Mexico and captains will be named by the government.
The Halifax Relief Committee thanks Mr. W. S. Finlay for donating the Empress Theatre free of charge for the Erminie production on Thursday evening, covering only necessary production expenses.
Japanese admiralty reports enemy submarines attacked a British convoy escorted by Japanese warships in the Mediterranean on December 30. The arrival notes say the submarines were repulsed with no losses for the convoy or escort.
Building permits issued in December 1917 show a solid increase over December 1916 with plans for spring residences. Total permits for the year reach 1285 dollars with prior year totals adjusted by large one off projects like Lake of the Woods mill and Riverside School.
