City kicks off its 1983 Centennial with 3000 residents at the Arena Convention Centre. The opening ceremony features music dance sparklers balloons and a Happy Birthday tribute starting at 1 45 p m. Centennial planning committee organized the event.
Prime Minister Trudeau arrived in Hong Kong for an overnight stop en route to Thailand for a two nation Asia mission. He was greeted by Sir John Curle and Alan Kilpatrick after a 23 hour flight from Ottawa with his nine year old son Sacha aboard.
Calgary Flames shored up their defense to blank the Soviet all stars to 2 0 at even strength and limit the visitors to 29 shots. Kent Nilsson, Mel Bridgman and Lanny McDonald scored for Calgary while Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov replied for the Soviets. Krutov’s third period strike came on the power play as Vladimir Myshkin and Rege Lemelin shared goaltending duties.
Alberta Court of Queen's Bench Justice Tevie Miller blocked 94 Edmonton police layoffs after ruling no master servant relation exists and the city cannot unilateral lay off constables for economic reasons. The ruling directs the Edmonton Police Commission to decide budget allocations, signaling province wide implications.
Edmonton union members move toward court action after city orders layoff of 137 firefighters. Barrie Chivers said a suit will be filed Tuesday, seeking reinstatement or wages. Union secretary Ken Edmundson cites possible grounds on a technicality as they pursue reemployment. The last layoffs take effect at 6 p.m. Sunday.
