A major blizzard swept the prairies disrupting travel in Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Winds up to 60 mph produced zero visibility closing airports and delaying trains buses and road travel. One fatality reported and several crashes with drifts two feet deep.
A flight recorder from a Pacific Western Airlines Boeing 707 cargo plane wreckage recovered Tuesday is sent to Ottawa for analysis. Investigators seek to determine if the crash coincided with a power failure at Edmonton International Airport during a blizzard. Five crew members died as the jet hit a power line and trees two miles short of the runway.

After three hours of negotiations with FBI agent Thomas Farrow, Cardinal Shehan, and Dr. John Lyon the gunman surrendered without injury or the plane taking off. He faces federal hijacking and interference charges.
