The first baby of 1961 born at Medicine Hat Municipal Hospital arrived at 5:45 am on New Year’s Day. A girl weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces, unnamed but favored as Maureen by her mother, Mrs. Joe McFadden of Redcliff, is in good health with Dr. George Penrose in attendance.
Eight people were killed and five seriously injured in two head on collisions in Saskatchewan during a holiday weekend. A Winnipeg family and Yorkton Terriers coach were killed near Elfros while four Wagner children and two other passengers were hospitalized. The Handel collision killed four people including teachers and a nurse, with one Yorkton player in critical condition. Police cited unpaved Highway 14 and snow as factors.
Ottawa report says some federal Conservative circles think Saskatchewan Premier Douglas could be drafted to lead the New Party. Hazen Argue doubts the bid, while observers argue Douglas’s national stature would bolster West and farm support amid Tory efforts to regain strength in Quebec and Ontario.
The United States accuses the Soviet Union and North Vietnam of airlifting extensive materials and hundreds of North Vietnamese communists into Laos to support Red rebels. Washington cites hard evidence of at least 130 flights since December 15 and notes Soviet IL-14s carried howitzers and rations before Vientiane’s recapture. Eisenhower received new intelligence on Laos as leaders briefed at the White House. The president is regarded as seeking a rapid, clear action to deter further Communist aggression while hoping to avoid outside military intervention.
Prime Minister Diefenbaker said circumstances in strife torn Laos have changed but Canada would reconvene the three power truce supervisory commission only if Laos requests it. He spoke after a three hour cabinet meeting and did not confirm reports that Laos is willing to summon the commission of Canada India and Poland.
In Havana Castro ordered the U S Embassy staff reduced to 11 by Wednesday night and invited the entire staff to leave Cuba. He said the move mirrors Cuba's own embassy in Washington and warned of new charges to be raised at the U N Security Council meeting.
A Finnair DC-3 crashed north of Vaasa Finland killing all 25 aboard. Witness Kahlevi Tiainen described a sudden explosion and the plane becoming a torch as it plunged to a wooded area. The wreckage burned beyond reach and no survivors were found.
Canadian press reports three days of revelry ended with at least 33 deaths on roads and 18 more from fires and other accidents. Snowstorms disrupted Eastern Canada traffic while Quebec and Maritime areas saw heavy snow and strong winds. long distance calls surged and police noted few drunk driving incidents in major cities. Vancouver hosted a record 102 swimmers in 41st Polar Bear Club dip into 45 degree waters.
Identical 12 year old twins from Steinbach Manitoba progress days after one donated a kidney to the other. Johanna Nightingale recovered well with her father visiting. Lana Nightingale reported up and around and in good shape per Peter Bent Brigham Hospital spokesman.
The Alberta cabinet rejected two more Lutterite colony applications from a Calgary real estate firm and the Red Willow colony for Rumsey and Rowley north of Drumheller. E F Breach said the colonies are not in the public interest. Four applications rejected, one approved, three pending. 56 colonies exist in the province.
Elizabeth Blakney 17 was found unconscious in a car with the frozen body of Geoffrey MacDonald 19. Lab tests in New Brunswick sought the cause while carbon monoxide poisoning and freezing were suspected after the pair spent about 36 hours in an isolated area before skiers found them.
In the St Catharines civic plebiscite Monday voters backed Sunday movies by 14 663 to 9 744. Ivan J Buchanan age 52 was elected mayor heading a 12 member council to govern the newly enlarged city after amalgamation. The population rose to 2 530 000 from 41 200 as amalgamation with three neighboring municipalities took effect making St Catharines Ontario's sixth largest city.
The Lao government announced that its forces retook Xieng Khouang from leftist rebels, with paratroopers jumping 34 miles east of the city. Prime Minister Prince Boun Oum seeks constitutional legitimacy as SEATO weighs settlement options amid regional tension and North Vietnamese claims accusing the U S Seventh Fleet of sending ships to Ta Nang.
In Brussels the chamber rejected a Socialist bid to scrap the government's austerity program by 121 to 83 amid ongoing street violence and strikes. Premier Gaston Eyskens defended tax increases as banks fortified the Parliament while Socialist leader Georges Bohy urged his resignation.
The London Evening Standard reports Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones visiting Birr Castle in Ireland while considering buying a country home. They are believed to eye Powerscourt in County Wicklow, with Lord Powerscourt asking about £150,000 for his 14,000 acre estate including a Georgian mansion and surrounding lands. Thousands reportedly visit to see the royal couple during their Birr stay.

About 250,000 dollars of furniture went on sale at 12 01 a m under a city bylaw on closing hours. Early arrivals waited since 1 p m and a store window was cracked during the surge.
London Reuters reports British Insulated Callenders Cables wins a $7 million Magna Pipeline Co contract to lay a 53 mile flexible submarine gas line from British Columbia to Vancouver Island. It will deliver about 50 million cubic feet of gas daily, at depths up to 310 feet.
