A New Year celebration in front of St Pauls cathedral in London ended in a panic near midnight. Crowds stampeded down Ludgate Hill causing injuries and fainting among women and children while police and ambulances assisted the worst cases.
In Innsbruck Austria on January three an avalanche in the Arlberg region swept down on a group of ten tourists eight were killed and two rescued survivors were seriously injured. The party included five Englishmen, ten English women, two German brothers and a Tyrolese guide. Professor Lehr of Marsburg University was among the rescued. Locals say they ignored official weather warnings.
Calgary renews most of its beer licenses but seven are not renewed including Riverside Arlington Lincoln Alexandra and Whitney as federal census shows population declines while Edmonton keeps 19 licenses. Calgary expects two more licenses pending Liquor Control Board decisions amid a population shift affecting license allocation.
Emerson Porter sold two fanions named Coffee Grind and Nightmare to the Calgary Stampede management for 800 dollars. The horses are noted for wild behavior with Nightmare having tossed riders last year. They previously won harness prizes at the local fair and bucking contests two years ago.

Irene May Benner widow of Wilfred Benner died suddenly yesterday at her mother Mary Summers home in London. She had been visiting here for three weeks. Her home is in Berry Creek Alterta. The funeral will be held here. The piece notes that Western women use powder to whiten faces while Fijian island women employed black paint to increase charms.

Miss Garman Cotter 23 of Fort William and Mrs. M Malline 45 of Port Arthur died in a collision when a motor car driven by O G Parker of Port Arthur crashed into a freight train at a highway crossing. Miss May Ryan was fatally injured and a second woman suffered a double skull fracture. Parker escaped with minor injuries as the car was hurled by the impact. The engineer halted the train upon seeing the car approach.
A. L. Smith K.C. appointed agent of the Attorney General for the Calgary Judicial District with Crown Treasurer duties. The post, vacated by James Short K.C. at year end, has existed for over 21 years. Smith assumed duties Monday morning.
Richard McCullough of Calgary was arrested in Toronto where police found the dead body of Mrs Emma Heins, three illicit stills and whiskey. A post mortem was ordered and McCullough was remanded to January 10 for court appearance.

A dispute over a fifteen cent bill led to the killing of a New York tailor. Witnesses say Jull Lubskin accused Abraham Damm of undercharging and a police officer testified Lubskin grabbed shears and stabbed the tailor, then fled.
