A four-storey Montreal building at 6976 Querbes Ave in Park Extension burned on New Year’s Day killing seven people including a Haitian immigrant family of four and a 64-year-old man. Firemen battled the three–alarm blaze as arson investigators joined the probe.
A 35 year old Gatineau man known as Sylvio Lamoureux was charged with armed robbery two counts of attempted murder wearing a disguise and using a firearm during the crime after three gunmen robbed an Ottawa Dominion grocery store and shot two Brink's guards. The pair, William Bruce McKay and Donald Strathearn, were wounded with McKay in surgery and Strathearn in stable condition. A truck stolen from Hull was used by the gunmen and police hunted the remaining suspects. Distance between Ottawa and Gatineau police led to Lamoureuxs arrest in a small city restaurant across the river. The amount stolen is reported as around thirty four thousand dollars.
President Reagan and General Secretary Gorbachev exchanged New Year greetings on peace while defending opposing Star Wars positions. Both referenced Geneva summit talks on arms control, signaling mood in ongoing U S Soviet relations. Reagan urged defusing nuclear threats through defense, and Gorbachev warned against escalating arms races while noting cautious progress in trust.
