Prime Minister R B Bennett offers New Year message urging faith in Canada's resilience. He says the world faces trials and Canada has endured, with progress to come through strengthened unity, stronger finance, and renewed trade, despite hardships. Rt Rev Howard Mowll bishop of Western China and well known in Canada was in serious condition after bandits beat him with pistol butts and stabbed him in the back aboard a native boat traveling from Chungking to Chengtu. Mrs Mowll was with him and the attackers took money and baggage. Passengers mistook them for customs officials before gunfire.
General Paul Gerald Pau, famed French war commander, died today in Paris aged 83. A veteran since 1870, he lost an arm in that war and dedicated his life to aiding the wounded. He served as president of the French Red Cross at the time of his death.
Federal and local authorities pursued a nationwide bombing wave unfolding across the East and Midwest. Since Wednesday, at least a dozen bombs sent by mail or express targeted Italian consuls and Italian-American figures, with bombings reported in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Youngstown, and other locales.

In Caltanissetta Italy on January 2 1939 Diego Nimeni was executed by firing squad for murder of a 12 year old. His accomplice Francegto Cal afto received a last minute reprieve from King Victor Emanuel. Nimeni was shot in the back at dawn. Cal afto has long proclaimed innocence.
