Liberal opposition in Alberta produced damning documents to accuse Premier Ralph Klein of evading questions and pursuing private hospitals. Klein left the legislature abruptly while Liberal Leader Nancy MacBeth claimed he was caught red handed. NDP interim leader Raj Pannu said Klein felt besieged.
An explosion at Suncor Energy’s northeast Alberta oil sands mine killed one worker and injured another. Authorities said the blast may have been caused by a gas leak in a truck. investigators from Suncor, Millennium Construction Contractors, the RCMP, and occupational health and safety officials reviewed the scene. The injured worker was hospitalized and possibly flown to Edmonton for further treatment. No names released.
Alberta heads for a 3 billion dollar surplus as third quarter results show windfall from oil and gas revenues and strong personal income taxes. About 1.6 billion will reduce debt to 12.5 billion. 1.4 billion funds one time spending to ease regional health authority debts and aid farmers and school boards. Health of economy hinges on Heritage Savings Trust Fund returns.
Alberta outlines a 19.4 billion revenue forecast with a 3.17 billion surplus up from an earlier 617 million. Personal and corporate tax figures, oil and gas revenues, heritage fund injections, school property tax and lottery income are adjusted to reflect revised projections.

Bruins defense man Marty McSorley faces possible assault charges after a two handed swing left Vancouver forward Donald Brashear with a concussion. The incident occurred with 2.7 seconds left in Vancouver 5 2 win as Brashear lay on the ice before hospital care. Brashear’s status could keep him out up to 21 days while McSorley flew to New York for an indefinite suspension hearing.
Jason Brock 28 proposed to Katherine Beaudoin 30 by appearing in Maxim on page 34. Beaudoin submitted the idea to the magazine and used the issue as the platform. Brock accepted the proposal when Beaudoin picked him up from work.
