Port Alberni British Columbia. Carl Charleson 19 was in hospital after a Dec 27 car crash en route to a Kiss concert in Vancouver. He remains with feeding tube pins and plates while in a coma and shows limited movement. Last week a thief stole his CD player and Nike socks from his private hospital room.
Canadian Press reports Iberta Treasurer Stockwell Day will stand trial in Red Deer for defamation after a Red Deer lawyer and school trustee sued him for comments about defending a convicted pedophile. The suit also targets the Red Deer Advocate. Trial set for Nov. 6 over ten days with a civil jury requested.
Glen resident Dianne Smith argues the city should not bill her for a leak that crossed the property line on Rossdale Way. An adjuster’s report claims the valve was damaged by her plumber and the city suggests the fault lies on her side. Smith contemplates legal action as insurance won’t cover the damage.
Premier Ralph Klein seeks final passage of a private health care bill as the opposition vows to delay. Lt-Gov Lois Hole opens the spring session with a throne speech. Critics accuse Klein of advancing an agenda favoring elites while Liberal and NDP members push alternative reforms.
A Dover man Terry Lee refused burial in a garden for his wife Ruth who died in January. He said he would embalm her to keep her in the front room if required, after local council denied the requested home burial. Neighbours complained to Dover Council about the idea.
Defence lawyers in the Ludwig and Boonstra oilpatch vandalism case argued the RCMP focus on Wiebo Ludwig ignored other suspects including informant Robert Wraight. Crown says Ludwig and Boonstra extorted by bombing wells to pressure energy companies. RCMP detachment head Dave MacKay avoided ruling out Wraight as a suspect.
