A Swift Current Broncos junior hockey team bus crashed on the Trans-Canada Highway near Swift Current, killing Scott Kruger Chris Mantyka Trent Kresse and Brent Ruff. Two more players were injured as the bus slid off the icy road in near zero temperatures with gusty winds.
Canada and the United States reached a late agreement on the softwood lumber dispute. Canada will levy an immediate 15 percent export tax on softwood shipments to the U.S., worth about 4 billion Canadian dollars last year, costing lumbermen roughly 600 million annually. The deal ends U.S. duties on Canadian pine, spruce and fir imports while the U.S. coalition had sought up to 36 percent tariffs. BC Premier Vander Zalm called it terrific, while MacMillan Bloedel’s Adam Zimmerman called it bizarre and sickening, warning of potential mill closures.
