Chief Justice J O Wilson of the BC Supreme Court ruled that the government exceeded its authority by appointing a royal commissioner to investigate the electronic bugging of a pulp union's Vancouver convention. He voided retired Judge R A Sargent's one man inquiry under the Public Inquiries Act, halting the investigation into the Pulp and Paper Workers union convention bugging. The union had challenged Sargent's appointment, alleging cabinet missteps. No comment from provincial officials was available.
Premier Bennett said the government will act immediately to revive the royal commission investigating the electronic bugging of a pulp union convention in Vancouver. J. O. Wilson of the British Columbia Supreme Court halted the commission hearing by telephone.
