A Chicago crowd faced a catastrophic blaze at the Iroquois Theatre. Fire spread rapidly through the house causing tramplings, suffocations, and numerous fatalities with police estimates around five hundred thirty to five hundred thirty six dead and many injured.
Ottawa reports the hockey club defeated Winnipeg last night. The Rowing club protested Pul ford over his reinstatement after turning professional last spring.
A warm Christmas Day in Medicine Hat featured 36 to 2 degrees, outdoor sports, a large church service at St. Barnabas, and a $27.50 hospital offering. Races on South Railway Street drew crowds as Tony Day won the mile heats against Windsplitter amid unconfirmed times and future sale talk. Rifle club members enjoyed the afternoon weather and a hockey match with the Cosmopolitan Hotel team was planned for Christmas afternoon.
A soggy rink and two inches of water did not stop the Seniors from beating the Cos 7 to 3. Referee C. S. Pingle oversaw a rough game with Charlie Pingle and umpires J. Keohane and B. White noting fence decoration by players.
The Cypress Club opened on Christmas Day in Cousins Block Toronto Street with about fifty members and friends present. President F L Crawford gave the inaugural address as W T Finlay M L A Mayor Hawthorne and others spoke.
A December 18 special meeting of the School Board approved re engagements for Miss Morrison Miss Reeve for one year from January 1 1904 at 600 and 900 for J E Loucks as assistant to the principal. Jessie A Fraser accepted a first class certificate teaching post for January 1. A second special meeting on December 29 approved bills including Marshall Hunter Evang Burns Cochran Pingle and others and adjourned. Anglican services announced for January 3 at St Anne's Josephburg and Feldman'sake School.
The eighteenth annual At Home hosted by Medicine Hat Masonic Lodge was attended by about seventy five couples. The hall decor, floor, music, and luncheon pleased attendees. I W Moore designed the decorations. A fuller report will appear next week.
This morning at Dunmore Junction Constable Mason of the Northwest Mounted Police on duty searching trains accidentally shot his wrist with his revolver. He was brought to the hospital and Dr Calder reports the wound not serious and Mason will be fit for duty in a few days.
On New Year's Day an eighth of a mile sprint along Toronto Street finishes at Assiniboia Hotel. Local organizers hope world sprinters Frank Orton and Frank Travis will stop over for an exhibition race. Orton is Canadian champion and Travis US champion, both having beaten national champions of England France and Germany. First heat at eleven o'clock.
J. A. Grant from Walsh visited Monday on CPR gas well work. The well reached 660 feet with a strong gas flow and drilling will continue to a deeper level.
Alfred Avery of Avery's Fiats reports two fat pigs weighing about 250 pounds apiece, giving a concise livestock update with a personal stake noted.
