Loonie falls near all time low as RBC raises mortgage rates

The dollar slips to within a quarter cent of its record low as mortgage rates climb again. Royal Bank of Canada leads with a fourth rate hike in under a month, lifting short term rates up to 6.65 percent for one year closed and 7.25 percent for one year open, with six month and convertible rates also rising. Royal Bank economist Carlos Leitao cites currency weakness lifting securities costs for funding.

Plea Offer Refused in Unabomber Case

The offer by Theodore Kaczynski to plead guilty to the Unabomber charges in exchange for life in prison without parole was rejected by U.S. officials. The negotiations were disclosed by the New York Times citing a Justice Department participant. The death penalty review committee, led by Attorney General Janet Reno, turned down the proposal.
