Statistics Canada reports October GDP rose 0.1 percent to 399.7 billion in 1981 dollars, a slowdown from September 0.3 percent and August 0.6 percent gains. Economist George Vash notes the general trend shows growth turning the corner.
In London a caller claiming to represent the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution warned of more actions if Reza Pahlavi is not deported. The message links to Pan Am Flight 103 and Iran Air 655 incidents, with investigators from Scotland Yard, FBI and others pursuing suspects as security increases at airports and airlines prepare enhanced baggage screening.
Jean de Grandpre, head of BCE Inc., tells a Senate panel that special programs for workers losing jobs to the free trade deal would risk discrimination. He backs universal retraining and relocation schemes for all laid off workers and notes the final report is due end of March. The Senate races to approve trade legislation before New Year.
Alberta Energy Minister Neil Webber announced he will not seek re election and plans a new career in the energy industry while remaining in office until an election is called. Premier Don Getty hints at a spring election as the Conservatives hold a strong majority. Webber is the third Alberta minister to bow out this month joining Larry Shaben and Greg Stevens.
Alberta Cattle Commission calls Ottawa to impose punitive tariffs on European goods to offset losses from Europe’s ban on meat imports from growth hormone treated cattle. Spokesman Chris Mills says Canada should mirror the U S 100 percent duties and align with Washington. The European ban takes effect Jan 1 and Canada’s beef exports to Europe total about 11 million yearly.
A Toronto Globe and Mail report cites a $90,000 Angus Reid poll of 1,505 telephone interviews from July 1929 showing Canadians wanted stronger anti pollution laws cleaner water literacy and housing ahead of the Oct 1 election call Prime Minister Mulroney responded with a $110 million five year St Lawrence cleanup a $196 million Halifax harbor joint program and a national literacy push.
An 11 year old boy admitted writing the note found on an American Airlines flight, leading to the dropping of charges against Peter Canning, a 40 year old college lecturer. The FBI described the investigation as having warranted the arrest but proceeded to exonerate him after the boy's confession. The flight from San Francisco to Dallas was diverted to Albuquerque for four hours of searches.
Brian Stott, 33, convicted of three counts of fraud in a $22 million loan scam involving the defunct Canadian Commercial Bank and Northland. He and three others used forged insurance policies to secure loans, profiting nearly $1 million and assets including a yacht. The scheme funded acquisitions and a U.S. bank, ending when a $2.5 million US cheque failed.
