In Toronto, the 41 year old Winnipeg mother of two who received the city’s first female heart transplant died from an infection. Her tissues were weakened by systemic lupus erythematosus, an untreatable condition, though doctors had proceeded with the transplant after she developed myocarditis.
Grego ry Ashford 23 of Toronto was remanded until Tuesday in provincial court on a first degree murder charge in the death of his girlfriend Faith Constance Russell 38. The case was adjourned for defense preparation. Ashford sought protective custody and is also wanted for questioning in Halifax and Montreal after surrendering Friday to police in Winnipeg.
Police say the Rome and Vienna assaults on El Al were planned in Lebanon and organized in Switzerland. Survivors link the attacks to retribution for a Tunisian strike on PLO HQ. Funerals held for Natasha Simpson and Francesco della Scala.

South African police arrested Winnie Mandela as she tried to return to Soweto, defying a government ban. A six-car security convoy forced her vehicle to the roadside near Johannesburg, while her daughter Zinzi and two grandchildren endured the moment. Mandela was driven to Krugersdorp police station after resisting officers and vocally criticizing the attempted arrest.
