The group discovered about 50 bags of Christmas treats left over and decided to share them with patients in the municipal hospital’s children's ward. Nurse Hazel assisted as the troop delivered the bags to the ward today.
A ferocious blizzard slams eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle with up to 60 mph winds. New Mexico’s largest city, Albuquerque, records 11 inches of snow the heaviest in its history, leaving thousands without power and more than a thousand cars marooned on U S highway 66. Four deaths are reported and hundreds seek shelter in armories and homes as roads remain impassable.
The 400 mile fog belt stretches from Chicago to Montreal and Toledo to Earlton while the first Trans-Canada Air Lines flight in 24 hours leaves Toronto for Vancouver. Flights in Western Canada face holds and cancellations as conditions worsen and a colder day is forecast. A 31 year old Orangeville man died in a Toronto area crash and a 29 vehicle collision near Welland caused major damage. Engineer Kenneth Dawe of Barrie credited with saving 10 people by slowing his diesel at a level crossing near Barrie.
The four day Christmas period ended with 594 traffic deaths in the United States, below the 620 estimate by the National Safety Council. Fires added 93 deaths and other accidents 97 for a total of 784, with California leading traffic fatalities at 61 and Texas, New York, Illinois each at 38.

London AP reports no contact from the four adventurers aboard the Small World balloon as 12 days pass since Dec 12 departure. Ships between Canary Islands and South America continue searching for signs of the British crew after their attempt to cross the Atlantic.
Prime Minister Diefenbaker suggested there may be announcements after today's cabinet meetings, possibly about government appointments. He avoided concrete details and did not confirm whether civil service reforms were finalized, deferring inquiries to A. D. P. Heeney, who met with the PM but offered little information.
Picket lines by a television producers union faltered as CBC news writers and some technicians in Montreal return to work. The dispute centers on recognizing the Association des Realisateurs as bargaining agent while CBC maintains producers are management.

Two contracts exceeding 1 million dollars were approved for the 184 million dollar South Saskatchewan River irrigation and power dam project. Smith Brothers and Wilson of Regina won 738,179 for headquarters buildings. The Foundation Company of Canada secured 339,354 for a 1,000 foot construction bridge across the river. The project aims to irrigate about 500,000 acres.
The Jaycees organized a 25-vehicle car cavalcade for residents of Baptist Haven of Rest and St. Joseph's Home for the Aged. The tour escorted seniors through local residential neighborhoods to view Christmas lights.
