A New Year message from D. W. Hays, President of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, expresses faith amid drought and wartime anxieties. It cites six months of extreme dryness, calls for perseverance, and predicts a better year with improved social and economic life for the city and region.
Sir Edward Beatty, head of Canadian Pacific Railway, notes in his year end review that Canada emerges from 1939 and the war with a stronger, more resourceful economy and a rebuilt, more responsible society. He cites gradual recovery, efficiency gains, and hoped crop prospects as factors shaping the outlook.
Stockholm dispatch says a 704 ton German naval craft sunk in a snow storm off Sweden with one crew member drowned. French flares claimed a Nazi submarine sinking by a French warship and a British bomber.
Ottawa reports S Garland, ex Bow River MP and CCF organizer, named secretary to new Canadian High Commissioner to Eire Hon John Hall Kelly resigns all CCF ties. In Torre Annunziata, south of Naples, a fast passenger train rear-ended a troop train on a siding. Investigators say a switch failed as snow and cold hampered rescue efforts. At least forty people died and about 150 were injured.
Police Chief J. M. Taylor urges parents to keep children off icy city hills to prevent serious sleigh riding accidents. Young and teenage riders have used icy slopes for thrills, creating hazards as motorists struggle to stop on slick streets.
An unidentified Montreal resident contributed 10000 dollars to a Finnish aid fund being collected locally. The donor requested anonymity and the contribution supports relief efforts in Finland.
London December 30 authorities reported the King will authorize the Ministry of Labour and National Defence to call up additional men aged 18 to 41. The aim is to set registration dates for multiple age groups quickly without waiting for royal proclamations.
An authorized source says Adolf Hitler will not host the usual New Year receptions in Berlin. Instead, well wishers may enter their names in a special visitors book at the Chancellery.
In Tokat near Erzincan southern Anatolia new violent quakes and deep underground rumblings sparked fears of further disaster. Deaths in Erzincan province were reported to total at least 40,000. A trainload of injured headed to Ankara for surgery while military planes dropped food and clothing to survivors. Britain contributed £100,000.
Winnipeg December 50. Professor Sidney E. Smith of the University of Manitoba addressed a CBC audience on Canada’s war aims. He argued Canada defends fundamental decencies of individuals and nations against Hitler’s aggression, backing force if needed to stop Nazi tyranny. He cited Crerar’s hope for a peace that outlawed war and allowed self governing nations to cooperate for global prosperity.
An abrupt war front update notes the Anglo French army reinforced by ten Empire troops behind water barriers. French strategists describe a stalemate while awaiting decisive moves under General Gamelin. The Maginot defenses are bolstered along secondary lines from Geneva to the English Channel as Poland is invaded.
Paris reports patrol activity between the Moselle and Saar despite intense cold. German high command cites aerial reconnaissance over France and England with quiet on the west front. The British battleship of the Queen Elizabeth class was torpedoed but reached port under its own steam.
