Building Boom in Medicine Hat 1897 New Homes and Improvements

The News lists numerous new buildings erected in Medicine Hat during 1897 and a wide range of accompanying improvements. Homes on Main Street and Toronto Street, stone foundations, frame cottages, stables, fences, and verandahs are described, with additions to churches, schools, and commercial properties. Real estate activity includes townsite sales and transfers, totaling about 10,000 in value for the period, plus new heating installations and a large CP Railway structure program.

Canada’s 1897 Public Accounts Show Yearly Deficit

The 1897 year end June 30 public accounts report receipts of 37,820,778 and expenditures of 38,349,750, a deficit of 510,081. Capital outlay totaled 3,505,921 with railway and canal spends including Intercolonial 149,112 and St. Lawrence canal 1,355,525. Depositors’ savings reach 48,034,975, Dominion notes rise by 1,945,481, and net debt climbs to 261,528,596 with average gross interest 3.20 percent and net rate 2.76 percent.

Gold in the Hills Found by Cypress Hills Rancher

A sheep rancher named Shubert reports placer gold finds in Cypress Hills creeks with samples brought in recently. Police scout Louis Cobelle also visited for a separate find on the south side. harsh weather halts both efforts, but geology suggests a northern gold belt extends from Yukon toward Cypress Hills.
