Alberta warns shoppers to conserve as power demand soars

The Alberta Electrical System Operator issued a statement urging customers to conserve electricity due to heavy use across the province on Monday. Demand pushed prices to $1,000 per megawatt from 5 p.m. and peaked at 11,500 megawatts at 6 p.m., about 2 percent below the winter record. The alert expired at 1 a.m. with prices remaining high overnight and into Tuesday.
