Alberta nurses issue strike notice in Medicine Hat area

In Edmonton UNA President Margaret Ethier announced that 61 Local unions have filed strike notices with nurses' employers. The walkout begins January 1 1982 after contract talks with the Alberta Hospitals Association collapsed over shift notice and hours. The plan will cut Medicine Hat and District Hospital patient capacity from about 217 to 60. Nurses seek higher wages and better conditions while the AHA offers 17.6 percent.

Premier Lougheed says government won’t push direct billing rollout

In a CJCA radio interview Premier Peter Lougheed warned Alberta residents who oppose direct billing that they should not take complaints to the government. He said the province will not be involved in gradual implementation or special treatment for seniors or low income groups as the new system begins.
