Paris reports the government has promulgated a three ply trade weapon tightening import restrictions with quotas favoring French exports. Agricultural quotas show heavier import limits on meats eggs milk and related products. Vatican City also imposes a first ever import tariff effective January 1 with a moderate duty schedule on nearly all imports.
Winnipeg report from December 29 notes Leslie Ringer and four others succumbed to asphyxiation believed caused by a malfunctioning air burning heating apparatus. Mrs Ringer died in hospital while husband, son Paul, Eva Posner nurse, and Ellen Mykytka domestic servant were hospitalized. S Paul neighbor aided in time to save the remaining occupants.
An elk blocked the CN Rail west bound flier No. 1 near Jasper Alberta in heavy snow on Thursday. The animal rolled under the wheels derailing four freight cars with no human casualties.
Washington December 29 Canadian Press reports an intensive push for silver remonetization in the United States with 27 senators on record for free and unlimited coinage of both gold and silver.
Four persons were killed instantly when an automobile returning from a house party was struck by a fast freight train at the Michigan Central crossing in Rodney Ontario. The dead include Carman Evans Rodney public school principal Miss Jean Stewart Alma College teacher and two University of Western Ontario students Georgina Munroe and Sarah Patterson.
Fire swept a full city block in Halifax including the Royal Hotel in sub zero weather. Nine hours of battle left only walls standing and forced thirty people from beds as flames hurled bodies down tracks and reduced a car to twisted wreckage.
R B Pratt was re elected president of the Canadian Legion for a third year at a large meeting. Len Sharland and Hugh Weightman were re elected as first and second vice presidents. Nominees for executive posts were listed and a key address by Rev. J F Butcher praised the year’s work. London reports on a Moscow forecast that the 1934 Soviet harvest will exceed 1932 and 1931 yields. The International Wheat Commission notes a 25 percent rise in wheat and 90 percent in other grains, complicating price rehabilitation while Russia seeks a larger export quota. Meetings on wheat recovery and consumption were postponed to late January to fit delegates from 21 nations. Abel S. Enukidze announced the Moscow estimates in Izvestia.
Washington reports the United States seeks authorization for 102 new ships atop a 268 million dollar build program, adding pressure to British disarmament efforts. Alberta motor licenses stay on a calendar year basis with current fee scales. Starting April 1 a 20 percent reduction applies for licenses issued for the rest of the year and a further 40 percent cut on July 1 for the remaining six months. A flat $10 fee applies to small passenger cars built in 1925 or earlier.
Gleichen board of trade to launch a public library after collecting over 300 books. About 100 arrived from Calgary Public Library with others donated by residents. Megers J. F. Gorrill John Boyd and Rev Gilbert lead the committee. Gorrill will head the library with catalogued works and future plans to expand.
