In Doncaster England South Yorkshire Police staged Operation Marconi to counter criminals who used overheard police radio. They spoofed a landing of aliens drawing suspects to a fake scene and then arrested those who rushed to inspect the spacemen.
In Addison, Illinois, David Wasel and Madeline Wasel face child endangerment and reckless conduct charges after police found an eight year old boy shackled to a bunk bed and left home alone on Christmas. The mother pleaded for custody, but a Juvenile Court judge awarded it to a relative as investigation continues.
Father Paolo Turturro in Palermo revealed in a Christmas sermon that a 22 year old man confessed to helping kill anti Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone in May 1992 and taking part in four mafia ambushes. The disclosure sparked ethical protests and calls for resignation while the priest faces possible excommunication.
Bosnian Serbs near Sarajevo captured 11 Canadian UN troops, ordered them against a wall, and fired over their heads before freeing them after a two hour standoff amid ongoing fighting around Vogosca. Seven died and 52 wounded in Sarajevo area clashes as Bosnian and Serb forces exchange fire.
An extreme cold snap swept much of Canada over Christmas, halting highways and stranding travelers. Ontario and Quebec reported record lows near 30 C, with two hypothermia deaths and several fatal crashes. In Winnipeg a 28 year old woman died outside, and in Toronto a 29 year old man was found frozen near a viaduct.
A natural gas explosion at Weigle's Sausage and Meat Ltd. on 3rd Street SE injured seven people, including five firefighters. The Weigle couple, Ernst and Ingeborg, lived upstairs. Ernst suffered second degree burns and a fractured collarbone, Ingeborg had back and hip pain. Firefighters contained a small leak despite a big blast, and damage was about $55,000 to contents and building.
London Drugs supervisor Debbie Dixon spotted a Loomis uniformed suspect during Christmas Eve shopping at West Edmonton Mall. The man, sought for frauds across Alberta and B C, abducted his three year old from a Victoria courtroom nearly two years earlier and was arrested after the sighting. The child’s case gained attention on Global Television Missing Treasures.
Four gunmen who seized a Rostov region school and hijacked a helicopter with twelve teens fled across the Caucasus. Police captured all four and recovered about $9.4 million of the $10 million ransom. more than $500,000 remains missing. The hostages were freed and the children reunited with families in Rostov-on-Don.
