In Galveston Texas rescuers search wreckage after a Tuesday night grain elevator blast that killed seven or more workers and injured 23. Two survivors were pulled free and authorities fear several more are missing as smoke and dust hinder efforts.
Montreal dispatch says Margaret Trudeau will astonish audiences as a film actress in Kings and Desperate Men. Edmund Ward praises her Rembrandtesque depth as she protects her child, while her role follows a TV host whose station is seized by terrorists. Ward notes violence is handled intelligently and plans further script work in Ireland.
Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin told the Knesset he will not surrender to international pressure over Egypt's terms for a peace settlement. He unveiled a plan for Palestinian self rule while retaining Israeli military presence in parts of the West Bank and Gaza. Begin said sovereignty remains Israel's claim but rights of Jordan and Palestinians must be resolved before any accord with Arab states.

Anthony Robins, 26, demanded 10 000 dollars two new trucks and a day off on his birthday while holding two hostages at Home Juice Co. in Melrose Park. Police overpowered him outside the offices after he fired twice inside the plant. Hostages were unharmed. Robins faces forcible restraint and unlawful use of a weapon charges.
Two untamed natural gas wells in Alberta, one in West Pembina field near Edmonton and a second near Cessford east of Calgary, remain uncontrolled as Red Adair returns to Houston. The Pembina well, operated by Amoco Canada, vented about 20 million cubic feet daily with hydrogen sulfide before ignition. Detonation and capping efforts are planned, with an 800 metre water line being laid to reduce sparks. Costs run high as Amoco estimates gas loss at 525000 to 630000 dollars and a 1.2 million dollar rig was destroyed. The Cessford well, by Gamma Resources, blew on Dec 19 and created a crater, with the more severe, weeks-long control anticipated.
