In Belfast a two day unofficial truce collapsed amid shootings bombings and arson. The British army warned parents their children playing with toy guns risked death as soldiers patrolled troubled areas issuing leaflets to caution against ambush simulations and real gunfire.
President Anwar Sadat will address a joint session of the People's Assembly and the Arab Socialist Union central committee in Cairo to outline Egypt's course of action to recover Israeli-occupied territories. He will discuss war plans, political moves, and economic issues as 1971 nears its end, with Egypt insisting war may be needed to force Israeli withdrawal and pledging cooperation with UN envoy Gunnar Jarring’s renewed peace mission.
The United States and North Vietnam cancelled the next session of the Paris Vietnam peace talks set for Thursday. US cited continued North Vietnamese air attacks as justification. North Vietnam protested, while VIet Cong accused Nixon of sabotaging negotiations. Talks offered no new date, liaison officers may set a future meeting.
Two scientists who visited South Vietnam in August said the United States Air Force uses a new bomb that kills everything within a 3280 foot radius. They described a mushroom cloud device intended to clear dense jungle for landing zones but learned it has been used as an anti personnel weapon. Confirmation came from a U S embassy official in Saigon. The weapon, called a commando vault or explosive bulldozer, is reportedly used two or three times weekly and is not classified.
Canadian and U S police have not identified a man who hijacked an Air Canada DC 9 to Cuba. The suspect used a passport bearing the name Patrick Critton, 24, a Harlem native. Fingerprints from the plane do not match records. charges considered include kidnapping and interference with transportation.
President Nixon and West German Chancellor Willy Brandt meet at Nixon's Biscayne Bay villa to map a two day strategy for improving relations with the Communist world while preserving the Western alliance. U S crews wounded, one chopper destroyed, six damaged. five South Vietnamese and three crew members killed. U S B 52s operate along the Laos border. North Vietnam accuses U S of bombing civilian targets including a school in Quang Binh province.
Evidence points to an Indian Air Force Caribou raid against the Islam Mission orphanage in Dacca during the India Pakistan conflict. An IAF pilot said night raids used Caribous and bombs were dropped from back doors though officials deny responsibility. He claimed only flares were dropped. A drone was heard the night of the strike as bombs created large craters. Founder Mohamed Rahman feared about 300 boys died, many buried.
