London reports a slackening of Allied momentum on both eastern and western fronts. German forces under Von Hindenburg halt near the Vistula while Austrians check along the Galician Carpathians. French statements claim limited gains in Belgium and near Lens with trenches held near Ypres.
Mounted troops in the city are barred from the bars by an official order in effect today. The action follows several days of unruliness with some soldiers, plus Calgary troops, involved. A few men are serving three day terms in the guard room, and officials expect the measure to benefit the force despite penalizing the many for the actions of a few.
Community notices list Christmas tree entertainments at Central Park Baptist and Holy Trinity with children supper times. Westminster church activities include Ladies Aid Missionary Society on 6 pm tomorrow and annual congregational meeting on January 4 1914. Knox church and St Barnabas also host Sunday School trees and evening programs with mixed-age performances.
Members of the Checker Club will meet in the basement of St John Church tomorrow Tuesday at 8 p m to plan a New Year tournament. All interested are invited to attend.
At a joint meeting of the old and new school boards on Saturday afternoon one chair was vacant and two vacancies occurred with one member missing. Dr Smyth, a member of both boards, was the only absentee as the old board planned a regular meeting and another session was set for this evening before the new board takes charge.
Bella Wilson received a thirty day sentence reduced to a fine of 1 dollar with 2 dollars costs or thirty days, on the interdicted list after a fifth appearance in four months. The magistrate, police, and others have attempted reform while "John Barleycorn" remains firmly in control. R Rutherford, first offender, paid 1 dollar and 2 dollars costs for drunkenness.

Ottawa reports four new brigade generals gazetted by the militia council. Promoted officers include Col. R. M. Rutherford at Halifax and Col. Henry Smith Ottawa with other promotions for Col. T. Benson and Col. W. J. Hodgins in London Ontario. The three brigade commanders will be Denison for Ontario, Landry for Quebec, and Cowan for the West with Williams taking mounted rifles command. Hemming and Rut tannerings await postings in Winnipeg while Winters nears headquarters staff.
A large charity bonspiel on New Year’s Day has drawn many entries from diverse organizations and professions. Players need not be Curling Club members. the club supplies stones and fees are 50 cents each, with proceeds for charity. Secretary Inwood handles entries, listing numerous participating rinks and skips.
Windsor Ontario reports 17 year old Charles Mahoney slipped on an icy sidewalk and fell into an open well on his parents farm Saturday night, drowning.

A joint British air and sea raid on Cruxhaven on Christmas Day faced heavy German defense. Seven British airmen took part. Commander Hewlett is missing after a wreck off Heligoland while others were rescued by submarines. Submarines and destroyers aided recovery as crisscrossed mines were avoided in a bold, historic attack.
Sir Robert Laird Borden with S B Steele and staff witnessed a huge Volunteer parade in Winnipeg at Portage and Main. The march featured nearly 12,000 western volunteers ready for active service or awaiting the third contingent. A reception at the Atlantic Club followed, with Lieut Governor Cameron hosting a dinner that evening.
Chandler Anderson, special atache of the American embassy in London, reported there is no substantial difference in POW treatment among belligerents. He added prisoners are cared for as well as their captors can afford given military needs.
Two Canadian Veterinary corps members jailed in the Tower of London for disorderly conduct escaped after breaking a window as the guard was being hanged and fled back to camp. These are the first escapes from the tower in a century.
Nicholas Bawlf vice-president of Fort William Elevator and pioneer Winnipeg settler dies suddenly at age sixty six. Father of R. W. Bawlf of the Grain Exchange and of Fred and Chauncey Bawl, his widow survives. He helped form early city life and was known across the community.
Mounted Constable Towler is laid up at home after being kicked by his horse yesterday. He expects to be about in a day or so.
The Patriot ic Bonspell invites any person to form a rink and call Mr John Inwood secretary with a fifty cent entry fee per man. Receipts go to the Patriotic fund. Veterans may lend curling stones for New Years week and the club loans them back.
Christian Jensen Loren of Bingville 30 miles north of Carlstadt was found dead Christmas Day in his shack, sitting in a chair. Cause believed heart failure. Danish native, resident in Alberta for four years, no living relatives and limited schooling. He travelled widely in his life.
In Buffalo on December 28 a U S citizen was killed and another wounded when Canadian military patrols opened fire while pursuing hunters in Niagara River waters near Fort William Ontario. Canadian Corporal ordered a boat ashore. troops then fired as the group fled toward the American shore. Walters Simith was killed and Chas Borsch wounded. both residents of Buffalo.
City hall meeting shows about 62 attendees with few English speakers among applicants. Italians and other foreigners were directed to return Wednesday for possible work aid while authorities flag unworthy relief cases and plan prosecutions for fraud. Many newcomers claim Russian identity postwar, with Austrian German reservists possibly abroad.
